Setup & Testing Guide

Step by step: open the right account, install MetaTrader, install the Toyamato robots and indicators, and test them in the Strategy Tester. One action per step.

My platform:

The guide shows the steps for the platform you choose. Your choice is remembered in this browser only.

⚠ The most important step – do it before you attach any Toyamato program

  1. Tools > Options > Expert AdvisorsTools > Options > Expert Advisors: tick Allow WebRequest for listed URL and add both addresses:
https://api.gumroad.comlicense check
https://nfs.faireconomy.medianews calendar
  1. Restart MetaTrader – close it completely and open it again. Without the restart you will see “No connection to license server”.

1Open the right trading account

  1. Open an account at a broker that offers MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5. Not cTrader, TradingView or a web-only platform – the Toyamato tools run only in the MetaTrader desktop terminal.
  2. Start with a demo account. It costs nothing and you can test everything without risk.
  3. For Toyamato X EA on MetaTrader 5 you need a hedging account (not netting).

Example – the demo account I use in my own tests

  • IC Markets, Raw Spread account, MetaTrader 4 or 5, demo
  • Leverage 1:500 (where available), deposit 200 USD, 0.01 lot per chart

Important: 1:500 is not available everywhere. Retail clients in the EU usually get at most 1:30 on major pairs and 1:20 on other pairs (for example AUDCAD, NZDCAD). With that leverage the same setup needs a much larger deposit – see the table below.

How much margin does a trade need?

Leverage only changes the margin (the money MetaTrader blocks while a trade is open). It does not change how much you win or lose per pip – 0.01 lot is about 0.10 USD per pip at any leverage. But with grid mode or several robots, many trades can be open at the same time, and their margin adds up.

Margin for 0.01 lot trades1:301:1001:500
1 open trade~20–45 USD~6–13 USD~1.2–2.6 USD
1 robot, 4 trades open in a grid~80–180 USD~24–52 USD~5–10 USD
3 robots, 4 trades each~240–540 USD~72–156 USD~15–31 USD

Rounded examples for typical forex pairs (0.01 lot = 1,000 units of the base currency). The exact margin depends on the pair, the price and your account currency – MetaTrader shows it in the Terminal window, Trade tab, “Margin”. The floating loss of open trades comes on top of the margin and is the same at any leverage.

How much capital do I need? A simple rule: look at the largest drawdown in the backtests for the settings and lot you want to use, and make sure your deposit can take it several times. Real trading can produce a bigger drawdown than any backtest. Several charts or grid mode = more capital. This is an example, not financial advice.

If you want to open an account at IC Markets, you can use my partner link. It costs you nothing extra and helps keep this site running.

Affiliate disclosure: I may receive a commission if you sign up. It is not a recommendation or financial advice. Check that the broker is available and regulated in your country. The Toyamato tools work with any MT4 / MT5 broker.

2Install MetaTrader (one or several)

  1. Download MetaTrader 45 from your broker's website (it comes with the broker's servers already set).
  2. Start the installer. By default it installs into C:\Program Files (x86)C:\Program Files.
  3. Want two or more platforms (for example 2 demo accounts)? On the first page of the installer click Settings and choose your own folder, for example C:\MT4MT5_Demo1. The second one goes to C:\MT4MT5_Demo2.
  4. ⚠ Rename the desktop icon before you install the next platform – right-click it > Rename > for example “MT4MT5 Demo 1”. Every installation creates an icon with the same name, so the new one would replace the old one.
  5. Open MetaTrader and log in: File > Login to Trade Account – login, password and server are in the e-mail from your broker.

3Install Toyamato X EA and load a .set file

Installation step by step – MetaTrader 4MetaTrader 5
  1. Download the free 10-day demo or, after purchase, the full version from Gumroad.
  2. In MetaTrader click File > Open Data Folder, open MQL4MQL5 > Experts and copy the .ex4.ex5 file there.
  3. Do the WebRequest step (top of this page) and tick Allow automated tradingAllow algorithmic trading in the same window.
  4. Restart MetaTrader.
  5. Open a chart of the pair and timeframe, for example CADCHF M30.
  6. Open the Navigator (Ctrl+N) > Expert Advisors and drag Toyamato X EA onto the chart.
  7. Common tab: tick Allow live tradingAllow Algo Trading.
  8. Inputs tab: full version – type your License_Key (the demo needs no key). Give every chart its own MagicNum (see step 9).
  9. Click OK and switch on the AutoTradingAlgo Trading button in the toolbar. A smiling face in the top right corner of the chart means the robot is running. The robot icon in the top right corner of the chart turns blue when it is running.

MetaTrader 5: the robot needs a hedging account. On a netting account it stops with a message.

4Install Toyamato Century EA NEW

Installation step by step – MetaTrader 4MetaTrader 5
  1. Download the free 10-day demo or, after purchase, the full version from Gumroad. The default settings are made for AUDCAD M30; .set files for other pairs are on the Backtests page (see Load a .set file).
  2. File > Open Data Folder > MQL4MQL5 > Experts: copy the .ex4.ex5 file there. If you use a .set file from the Backtests page, copy it into MQL4MQL5\Presets.
  3. Do the WebRequest step (add https://api.gumroad.com and https://nfs.faireconomy.media) and tick Allow automated tradingAllow algorithmic trading. Restart MetaTrader.
  4. Open an AUDCAD M30 chart (main pair; NZDCAD M30 and AUDNZD M30 are also recommended).
  5. Drag Toyamato Century EA from the Navigator onto the chart. Common tab: tick Allow live tradingAllow Algo Trading.
  6. Inputs tab: on AUDCAD M30 the default settings are ready; on another pair Load its .set file from the Backtests page. Full version: paste your License_Key (the demo needs no key).
  7. Check the MagicNumber – every chart needs its own – and the lot: AutoMM = true trades 0.01 lot for every 200 USD of balance.
  8. Click OK and switch on AutoTradingAlgo Trading. The panel shows the license or demo status in its second line.

Built-in Account Guardian. The robot contains the Toyamato Account Guardian (chapter 14 of the inputs). It watches the whole account. If you run the robot on several charts, leave Guardian_Active = true on one chart and set it to false on the others – one Guardian is enough. If you already use the separate free Account Guardian, switch the built-in one off.

MetaTrader 5: Toyamato Century EA works on hedging and on netting accounts. Trailing stop and break-even are off by default, so the robot trades exactly like in the author's tests.

5Test a robot in the Strategy Tester

Step 1 – download the history data
  1. Tools > Options > Charts: set Max bars in history and Max bars in chart to a large number (for example 10000000). Click OK.
  2. Tools > History Center (F2) > Forex > your pair > double-click 1 Minute (M1) > Download. Wait until it is finished.
  3. Restart MetaTrader.

1 – choose the pair and 1 Minute (M1). 2 – Download. Simplified drawing – your MetaTrader may look slightly different.
  1. Nothing to do – MetaTrader 5 downloads the history from your broker automatically when the test starts. The first test of a pair can take a few minutes.
Step 2 – run the test
  1. View > Strategy Tester (Ctrl+R). Choose your robot (Toyamato X EA or Toyamato Century EA), the symbol and the period (for example M30).
  2. Model: Every tick (the most precise). Tick Use date and set From / To.
  3. Expert properties > Testing: initial deposit (for example 200 USD). Inputs > Load your .set file. OK.
  4. Click Start and wait.
  5. Save the result: Report tab > right-click > Save as Report. You get an .htm report and a .gif chart.

1 – Every tick. 2 – dates. 3 – deposit and .set file. 4 – Start. 5 – save the report. Simplified drawing – your MetaTrader may look slightly different.
  1. View > Strategy Tester (Ctrl+R) > Settings: choose the robot, the symbol and the timeframe, and set the date range.
  2. Modelling: Every tick based on real ticks (the most precise, if your broker provides the data) or Every tick.
  3. Deposit (for example 200 USD) and Leverage – the same as your account.
  4. Inputs tab > right-click > Load your .set file.
  5. Click Start. Save the result: Backtest tab > right-click > Report > HTML.

Read the report carefully

  • Modelling quality and model: “Every tick” tests are much more reliable than “Control points” or “Open prices only”.
  • The real test period: your broker may not have data for the whole range you chose. In the Period row of the report the first dates show the data really tested, the dates in brackets are only what you asked for.
  • The news filter does not work in the Strategy Tester (MetaTrader limitation).
  • The demo versions run in the Strategy Tester without time limit.
  • A good backtest is not a promise – real trading has spread changes, slippage and news.

6Install Toyamato Breakout Zone + Helper

Installation step by step – MetaTrader 4MetaTrader 5
  1. Download the demo ZIP from Downloads (or the full version from Gumroad) and unzip it. It contains the indicator and the free Toyamato Helper.
  2. File > Open Data Folder > MQL4MQL5: the indicator goes into Indicators, the Helper into Experts.
  3. Do the WebRequest step (top of this page) and restart MetaTrader.
  4. Drag the indicator onto a chart (Navigator > Indicators) and choose your language (UI_Language).
  5. Drag the Toyamato Helper onto any other chart and click OK – no settings needed. It never trades. One Helper serves all charts of this MetaTrader (news calendar and license check).
  6. Full version: type your license key into the indicator's License_Key input and keep the Helper running.

7Install Toyamato SMC Signal FREE

Installation step by step – MetaTrader 4MetaTrader 5
  1. Download it from Downloads – free, no license key.
  2. File > Open Data Folder > MQL4MQL5 > Indicators: copy the file there and restart MetaTrader.
  3. Drag it onto an H1 chart (recommended timeframe).
  4. Common tab: tick Allow DLL imports – the MT4 version needs it to download the news calendar (news lines).
  5. The news lines come from the built-in MetaTrader 5 economic calendar – nothing else to set.
  6. Choose your language and mode. Practise on a demo account – it often gives bad signals too. More about SMC Signal →

8Install Toyamato Account Guardian FREE

Installation step by step – MetaTrader 4MetaTrader 5
  1. Download it from Downloads – free, no license key.
  2. File > Open Data Folder > MQL4MQL5 > Experts: copy the file there and restart MetaTrader.
  3. ⚠ Put it on a separate chart that you do not use for trading (any symbol). Only one Account Guardian per MetaTrader – it watches the whole account.
  4. Common tab: tick Allow live tradingAllow Algo Trading – it needs it to close positions. Keep AutoTradingAlgo Trading switched on.
  5. Inputs: Max_Equity_DD_Percent (default 25) and Percentage_Stop_Percent (default 20). Set them lower than the drawdown limits of your robots, otherwise the Guardian never acts first.
  6. Push notifications to your phone: Tools > Options > Notifications > enter your MetaQuotes ID from the MetaTrader mobile app > Enable.

What happens when it triggers? It closes all open positions of the account (every robot, every Magic Number, manual trades too), deletes pending orders, retries until everything is closed, and sends you a push notification. Then it continues watching from the new equity.

It does not switch off AutoTradingAlgo Trading – your robots can open new trades later. When the notification arrives, you decide whether to stop trading.

9Magic Number – the golden rule

⚠ Never give two robots the same Magic Number. The Magic Number tells a robot which trades are its own. If two robots (or two copies of the same robot on two charts) share it, they manage, close or count each other's trades.

  • Every robot on every chart gets its own Magic Number – for example 1287, 1288, 1289…
  • This is also true for robots from other developers in the same MetaTrader.
  • After loading a .set file, check the MagicNum – the file contains the number of my test.
CADCHF M30 – Toyamato X EAMagicNum = 1287AUDCAD M30 – Toyamato X EAMagicNum = 1288NZDCAD H1 – other robotMagicNum = 5501Every robot on every chart: its own Magic Number – never the same twice.

Three charts, three different Magic Numbers. Simplified drawing – your MetaTrader may look slightly different.

10Using a VPS

⚠ Read the instructions on your VPS provider's own website carefully before you move a robot there (MetaQuotes built-in VPS or any other provider).

  • The same robot on the same account must never run at home AND on the VPS at the same time – both would open trades, so you would have double positions.
  • After moving to the VPS, switch off AutoTradingAlgo Trading (or close the robots) on your home computer.
  • On the VPS do the same setup: WebRequest addresses, restart, license key, Magic Numbers.

11Troubleshooting

“No connection to license server”
Add both WebRequest addresses (top of this page), then restart MetaTrader. If it still appears, restart once more.
The robot does not trade / sad facegrey robot icon in the chart corner
Switch on AutoTradingAlgo Trading in the toolbar and tick “Allow live trading”“Allow Algo Trading” in the robot's Common tab. Check the panel: spread filter, news pause or trading hours can also stop new trades.
“Demo expired” / “No license”
The 10-day demo has ended. Buy the full version and type the license key into the License_Key input. The key works only on the 2 account numbers entered at checkout.
No news lines / news filter shows “–”
Add https://nfs.faireconomy.media to the WebRequest list and restart. Breakout Zone: the Helper must run on a chart. SMC Signal on MT4: tick “Allow DLL imports”. In the Strategy Tester news never work.
I cannot see the program in the Navigator
Wrong folder (Experts / Indicators of this MetaTrader – use File > Open Data Folder) or MetaTrader was not restarted. Right-click in the Navigator > Refresh.
“Not enough money” in the journal
The account has not enough free margin for the next trade. Use a larger deposit, higher leverage (where available), fewer charts or a smaller lot – see the margin table in step 1.

Still stuck? Write to toyamatoforexworld@gmail.com with a screenshot of the chart and the Experts / Journal tab.

12Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Toyamato tools on cTrader, TradingView or MetaTrader web?

No. They are MetaTrader programs (.ex4 for MetaTrader 4, .ex5 for MetaTrader 5) and run only in the MetaTrader desktop terminal on Windows (or on a Windows VPS). Open an MT4 or MT5 account at your broker.

Which leverage should I use?

Leverage only changes how much margin a trade needs, not how much you win or lose per pip. With low leverage (for example 1:30 or 1:20 for retail clients in the EU) you need a much larger deposit for the same number of open trades. See the margin table in step 1. This is not financial advice.

What is the minimum deposit?

In my own tests I used 200 USD per chart with 0.01 lot and 1:500 leverage (where available). With lower leverage, several charts or grid mode you need more. Check the largest drawdown of the backtests and make sure your deposit can take it several times.

Can I run several robots on one account?

Yes, but every robot on every chart needs its own Magic Number, and the risk adds up. Add an account-level protection such as the free Toyamato Account Guardian.

Can I change the 2 account numbers of my license later?

No. The 2 MetaTrader account numbers are entered at checkout on Gumroad and cannot be changed later. Double-check them before you pay.

Does the demo work in the Strategy Tester?

Yes. The demo versions run for 10 days on any live or demo account and without time limit in the Strategy Tester. The news filter does not work in the Strategy Tester (MetaTrader limitation).

Can I run the robot on a VPS?

Yes. Install and set it up there exactly like at home (WebRequest addresses, restart). Never let the same robot trade the same account at home and on the VPS at the same time.

Is profit guaranteed?

No. The Toyamato tools are software, not a holy grail. Backtests and demo results do not guarantee future results, and you can lose money. Always start on a demo account.
